So sweet
Food cultures are extremely different from countries to countries. The further the countries are located geographically, the bigger the differences are. When I first came to the United States, I found it really difficult to get used to American food. Things like tacos, hamburgers, cheese, and fries were strange and therefore unfavorable to me (though fast food is very popular in China, I personally dislike it and have never had it in China, because it is unhealthy. I am that kind of person who always struggle with keeping my body in good health). As a result, during the first couple days, I only had some salads and seemingly healthy and unfried things for each meal. However, after several weeks, I finally found one American thing that was highly welcomed by my stomach. Perhaps you would have never thought about it, it was American desserts.
I like sweet food very much, and therefore I am obsessed with desserts including chocolate, cakes, and ice-cream. There are a couple of dessert stores that serve delicious cheesecake and green tea ice-cream, which are my two favorite desserts. Due to my parents’ warning and constrain (they didn’t want me to eat desserts very often), I didn’t have many chances enjoying them in China. While in America where they couldn’t restrict me anymore, I was able to eat desserts whenever I wanted to. Even though I know that desserts are not healthy as fast food, I failed to abstain from desserts in my life. They are the only exceptions of my healthy diet. Thus, American desserts like brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and cheese Danish (I was not sure whether they were originated in America, but those I bought from local dessert stores were really my love) become my favorite for a long period of time. I even spent some time learning to bake a couple of simple but delicious desserts such as brownies.
Eating desserts is not harmful at all, however. Studies have shown that sweetness helps people to relieve stress and to activate the body's happy cells. This is because sugar is rich in carbohydrates; such substances can stimulate the nervous system which causes us to feel happy. I would desire to eat sweets while I am upset or depressed. They could help me recover much faster. Also I would feel academic stress very often, which let sweets become a necessary part in my daily life. To me, sweets mean happiness and energy.
No one can imagine that how I am glad that dessert is a big part in American food culture. Most Americans have the habit which is eating desserts after lunch and dinner. So desserts appear everywhere in American big restaurants and small stores. Even at school, they are provided for each meal. I usually grab one or two chocolate chip cookies between classes to fulfill my energy. By doing that, I can highly enhance my academic performance. This also let me realize how important food is to our daily performance. I am not saying that eating many desserts is helpful. Having a limit is also very important.
